The impact of the ECHO Epilepsy community of practice | Dr. Carter Snead

Dr. Carter Snead on the practically productive model of Knowledge Translation that is ECHO Epilepsy

As Canadian Thanksgiving arrives this weekend, and with it the start of a new fall cycle of ECHO Epilepsy programming, including the upcoming launch of our new 5-week Quick Study programs for Anti-epileptic Drugs (AEDs) and Capturing the Diagnosis, we thought it was opportune to share this video message of gratitude from Dr. Carter Snead, world-renowned epileptologist and our retired Co-Lead/Founder of Project ECHO Epilepsy Ontario, that we filmed upon his retirement in December 2021.

Dr. Snead shares his gratitude for the “genius and practically productive model of Knowledge Translation” of the ECHO and ECHO Epilepsy Ontario: Epilepsy Across the Lifespan model of continuing medical education.

Dr. Snead speaks about how ECHO Epilepsy Ontario and the associated Ontario Epilepsy Network, have united all of the 8 regional epilepsy centres across the province, and how the program has extended it’s offerings since it’s inception in 2018 to include speciality programs on “Genetics and Epilepsy” and a “Neurology Trainee” program.

He speaks of the power of the “All Teach – All Learn” philosophy that drives ECHO and the incredible impact that community practitioners bring to the knowledge exchange, with their wealth of knowledge of what their epilepsy patients need and the wide range of resources that are available at a community level.

We would also like to acknowledge that Dr. Snead’s incredible career of dedicated service was recognized by The Canadian Association of Child Neurology encourages with their 2022 annual Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is named in honour of Dr. Henry Dunn, a pioneer in Canadian child neurology and the founder and first president of the CACN. Congratulations and immense gratitude for your work and legacy Dr. Snead.

Dr. Snead is currently Professor Emeritus in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, Clinician Scientist Emeritus in the Division of Neurology, and Scientist Emeritus at the Hospital for Sick Children.
