Why did you choose to become a Paediatrician?

Ever since I was a child growing up in Ghana, West Africa, I knew I wanted to do some work connected with taking care of children. So my decision was between being a teacher or a doctor. I chose the latter, and becoming a paediatrician was the best decision I ever made in my life.

I trained at SickKids and I have been in practice since the ’90s. I used to do call at various hospitals, including working in SickKids Emergency department, as well as teaching residents and medical students, but now my focus is on consultation and primary care paediatrics.

Why do you like being a community-based Paediatrician?

I enjoy the interaction with children and their families. Seeing your patients grow from infants, to older toddlers, and onto young adults, who trust you is a very satisfying feeling. My inspiration is seeing my sick patients recover from sometimes serious ailments. This is my ongoing drive in helping young families.

I did neonatology in my training and worked as a young doctor in neonatology for many years. That was my passion. Standing all night beside little premature babies, literally helping them initiate their first breaths as they move along life’s journey, and then being part of that journey, was very inspirational. Seeing them grow up to become healthy children helped me continue with what I do.

I love being a paediatrician!
