The Comorbidities & Epilepsy series is focused on various symptoms and illnesses that people with epilepsy may struggle with secondary to their epilepsy diagnosis.

This Quick Study series is facilitated by epilepsy specialists from the University Health Network (UHN), Kingston Health Sciences, Hamilton Health Sciences, London Health Sciences, and Epilepsy Centers.

Syllabus

  • Identify common sleep disturbances in individuals with epilepsy and their potential impact on seizure control.
  • Review basic screening tools and features of history to assess for sleep disorders.
  • Discuss approaches to address sleep disturbances, including referrals, behavioural interventions, and pharmacological considerations.
  • Recognize the prevalence and impact of mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety, in individuals with epilepsy.
  • Identify key clinical signs and patient-reported concerns that may indicate mood disorders in epilepsy.
  • Review how to incorporate mental health management into overall epilepsy care, including when to refer to specialists.
  • Explore the relationship between stroke and epilepsy, including post-stroke epilepsy.
  • Identify signs of increased stroke risk in epilepsy patients and understand how these risks affect overall care.
  • Develop strategies for managing epilepsy after a stroke
  • Explore the management of migraines among patients living with epilepsy. 
  • Review recommended strategies for acute migraine management.
