This curriculum will discuss the management of comorbidities associated with epilepsy that community providers may see, even if a neurologist or epileptologist is managing the epilepsy diagnosis.

This Quick Study series is facilitated by epilepsy specialists from Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Children’s Hospital – LHSC, McMaster Children’s Hospital and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).
Syllabus
- Explore the management of migraines among patients living with epilepsy.
- Review recommended strategies for acute migraine management.
- Review the unique presentation of ADHD in children and adults living with epilepsy.
- Highlight the difference in ADHD symptoms and cognitive effects of epilepsy or its treatments.
- Identify evidence-based approaches for managing ADHD in epilepsy patients, including medication considerations and non-pharmacological strategies.
- Recognize the prevalence and impact of mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety, in individuals with epilepsy.
- Identify key clinical signs and patient-reported concerns that may indicate mood disorders in epilepsy.
- Review how to incorporate mental health management into overall epilepsy care, including when to refer to specialists.
- Identify common sleep disturbances in individuals with epilepsy and their potential impact on seizure control.
- Review basic screening tools and features of history to assess for sleep disorders.
- Discuss approaches to address sleep disturbances, including referrals, behavioural interventions, and pharmacological considerations.
